Group Credit Meetings

What is a trade group?

Usually groups meet once a month. Prior to the meeting a request for names for discussion is circulated and each member has an opportunity to inquire on particular accounts of interest. Reasons for submission could be recent slowness, broken promises or simply higher than normal exposure which prompts a review of the customer. Once the entire list is complete, every creditor will report their aging information on all of the companies that have been inquire on. Some companies will manually input the information on our website however most supply a monthly download of their receivables and the customer aging data will automatically be populated.
At the meeting, a report is furnished for each customer and is discussed individually at the meeting.
Once the entire package is reviewed a round table discussion is started where recent addition company discussion takes place or at times a brain storming session on problems that the credit manager has experienced and possible solutions from his/her peers are presented.

What are the risks of meeting with my competitors?

As long as the rules are followed, there is minimal risk. A representative of Sterling Credit Group attends each meeting. The role of the representative is to insure that the competition act is followed and to bear witness to this by being an independent third party with no vested stake in the companies discussed. If necessary the representative will stop inappropriate conversation and if it persists will end the meeting. Prior to every meeting members must sign a Competition Act Compliance Statement.

Builder's liens in Alberta could be filed with either Alberta Land Titles or the Department of Alberta Energy and Utilities depending on the nature of the goods/services provided. Until now, only liens filed with Alberta Land Titles were available however this is only part of the whole picture especially if you are dealing with resource-based companies. Sterling West Credit Corp has spent the past year incorporating subsurface information into our database. Agreements with the government could include rights to oil, bitumen, gas, coal, minerals etc. Companies supplying goods or services that enhance the below ground property/agreement could have lien rights in the event of non-payment.

Annual subscriptions will be available for contributing group members only at an investment of $499 per year per user or you can opt to pay $29 per report on a pay as you go basis.

Builders liens bulletins and monitoring are an essential credit tool for any construction/oilfield service related company to pay close attention to.

Currently we produce a builders liens bulletin for Alberta however Saskatchewan and Manitoba will be on-line shortly.

The Builders Lien Act legislation was originally designed to provide a simple and inexpensive method for a person to collect money due to him for work done to or material supplied to a building site. What is referred to as a builders' lien in Alberta is commonly referred to as a "mechanics' lien" in other jurisdictions. All other common law provinces in Canada (i.e., all provinces except Quebec) have Mechanics' Lien Acts. Any person who does work in respect of an improvement or furnishes any material to be used in an improvement for an owner, contractor or subcontractor has a lien on the estate or interest of the owner of the land in respect of which the improvement is being made. The lien is created when the work is started or the first material is furnished but ceases to exist if it is not registered within the time period provided by the Act. Even when registered, a lien may cease to exist in a variety of situations if procedural requirements specified in the Act are not complied with.

Builders liens are typically filed with Alberta Land titles with the exception of a builders' lien against an estate or interest in minerals held directly from the Crown in right of Alberta which is less than a fee simple estate and is not registered under the Land Titles Act is to be registered with the Minister of Energy. Sterling West Credit Corp also gathers the Minister of Energy liens and have described them as Sub-Surface Liens.
